Liquorice, tired of seeing me work, sought a peaceful place to “rest”. The spot she chose was under some evergreen Flowering Ash trees. They only grow about twelve or fifteen feet high but in their upper branches yesterday afternoon several Topknot Pigeons were playing cheerfully and making quite a racket! The wings of Topknots make a squeaky sound as they start to fly and these were flitting from one small twig to another or chasing each other out of their leafy canopy and racing back. Almost as if they were playing musical perches! Liquorice had been watching them for some considerable time while I laboured in the veggie garden. Then Liquorice stood up and bounded over to the trees and took a flying leap up at the pigeons with a long mournful bark. She had never done anything like that before. Probably she wanted to join them in their game but the twigs would not have supported her, or maybe Liquorice was letting them know they were making too much noise. In any event Liquorice looked quite perplexed that she was still earthbound as she stood up after her rather inelegant landing. And the Topknots continued to play.
