Rosie came to visit with her Auntie Liquorice last week-end. Rosie is a nine and a half week old Golden Retriever puppy belonging to my Nephew and his wife. Rosie warmed to Liquorice straight away on this their second meeting.
She was no longer unsure of my black monster prancing all around her, in fact she started to play right away. Liquorice had to endure all the same puppy games, played with needle sharp teeth, that I endured when Liquorice was a baby. Bear in mind that Liquorice is only eight months old now so she is still a puppy. Liquorice will always be viewed by me as a puppy, even when she is twelve or fourteen years old, thinking positively. Rosie clamped her tiny jaws onto Liquorice’s upper lip and pulled. When that did not get her anywhere Rosie shook her head and although that had to hurt my little darling simply looked lovingly at “junior” attached to her lip. Rosie tried to play with several other parts of Liquorice’s anatomy such as her ears, paws, tail, clumps of long hair and once, Liquorice’s tongue. Individual toes seemed to hold special appeal. Rosie climbed all over Liquorice and it did not matter whether Liquorice was laying on her chest, side or back. Once with Liquorice on her back and with a front leg pawing the air for no apparent reason, Rosie unexpectedly jumped onto that leg and we all thought that Liquorice would fling Rosie into the wall with fright but Liquorice took it in customary good humor. Had she acted instinctively to Rosie’s surprise “attack” and threw her forearm back then Rosie would have known what it is like to fly like a birdie! But Liquorice delighted in playing with her “niece”. As the afternoon wore on Rosie played, then slept, woke and played some more and slept again with each sleep being watched over by her protective “Auntie Liquorice”.
